Find Peace in Overwhelming Times

Hello Beautiful Reader,

The Fall season is upon us here in the Northern Hemisphere. I love Fall. The weather is cooler, the leaves are changing, it feels like life naturally begins to slow down as we prepare for winter and hibernating.

As much as I dislike the dark evenings of standard time, if we kept daylight savings year-round the dark, dark mornings would be much worse. Around here it would be dark until 8am!

How about You? Dark evenings, or dark mornings?

On another note, I’ve had a lot of conversations with other sensitive women—on the podcast and in IRL— and here’s a thread that runs through all of them.

When we take care of our highly sensitive nature with kindness, compassion and connection, life is easier and we learn to trust our feelings. And we feel better. So, this week my essay is all about managing the anxiety, overstimulation, and overwhelm that can sidetrack us daily.

What is Your Overwhelm and Anxiety Trying To Tell You

Have you ever wondered, “What’s the point of my anxiety?” “Why do my feelings of overwhelm happen at all?”

I know there was a time when I thought if I could just rid myself of these feelings life would feel so much easier. And I would try to very hard make the discomfort go away. Or shame myself into not feeling them.

Here are a few examples of how I’d talk to myself when anxiety or feelings of overwhelm arrived.

“On no, not anxiety again. What the heck!” “There’s no reason to be anxious!”

“Why does this feel so hard? Why am I overwhelmed? This is just life and I should be able to handle it. Other people do.”

I just wanted those feelings to disappear and never ever show up again. In my head I thought if I could just push them away then I’d be okay. And so many of the resources I found shared ways to “rethink” myself back to “normal.”

But guess what, that only worked sometimes. And my uncomfortable feelings would pop up another time but with more intensity and dis-ease.

Deep Listening and Processing

What I’ve learned is that when you (and I) approach things differently, a lot can shift.

So, what if instead of trying to ignore, push away, or avoid your anxiety and overwhelm you met the emotional and physical feelings that arise with curiosity and compassion?

What might be revealed?

When I feel overwhelmed or anxious—because I do from time-to-time—if I place my hand on my chest where I feel the tension in my body and sit with it, a new perspective arises.

I usually hear from a part of me that worries I’m not taking good enough care of myself. Hearing the worry and concern helps me meet that part with compassion. Because there’s probably some truth to the worry.

As my curiosity and compassion grows, my anxiety and overwhelmed feelings release. And that gives me the space to make changes.

Making Changes

With greater insight, feeling overwhelmed, and anxious, and the worry that simmers below the surface, I’m able to hold myself with love and make whatever changes I need to, to take good care of me.

Like getting some rest. Creating or holding a boundary. Or going for a walk in nature. But sometimes listening to the worries and fears is enough.

It’s like hugging my inner child that’s scared and needs comfort.

So, next time you feel anxious or overwhelmed, try holding space for those feelings with kindness and compassion.

Somatic Coaching

If you've been considering an issue for some time, or continue to muddle over a sticky problem in your life, somatic coaching might help.

Through guided gentle movement, journaling, and breathwork clarity emerges. Not necessarily huge "AHA" moments, but simple, doable steps often become clear and help you move forward.

It’s a cool way to hear the wisdom of your body as you gain insight on stuck points, or something you’ve been working on and processing in your life or work.

If you'd like to know more about it and feel it in action for yourself watch this free video of a recorded somatic coaching session.

Circle of Sacred Sensitivity

Are you feeling overwhelmed by the world today? It feels like aggression, fast paced living, and overstimulation are more present than ever.

News feeds, social media, crazy drivers…There’s so much that disrupts our sensitive nervous system.

If you’re a woman in midlife whose sensitive nature is looking for a quiet place to land, our Circle of Sacred Sensitivity is that place.

We have a monthly virtual gathering where we connect with other women who are right where you are.

There are also resources you can access anytime. Meditations, somatic practices, recorded somatic coaching calls, journaling prompts, and chat rooms to connect with the other women anytime.

It’s a beautiful place to reset and center your sensitive needs.

Here’s what other sensitive women have said about our Circle:

“What I enjoy most was all of us sharing our stories, struggles and successes as HSPs in a safe space and us 'getting it' for and with each other.”
—M.G.
“…being with individuals that didn’t know the 'old me'; this allowed me to be who I am now - it was very freeing.”
